Supporting Our Community During the Holiday Season

The Challenges of Mental Health During Christmas

While the festive season is often portrayed as a time of happiness and togetherness, it can be a particularly difficult period for those struggling with mental health issues. The pressure to appear joyful, the financial strain of gift-giving, and the potential for increased substance use at social gatherings can all contribute to heightened stress and anxiety.

In Australia, the statistics highlight the significant impact of these challenges:

  • Increased Mental Health Services: In the four weeks leading up to Christmas in 2021, the Australian Government funded 1.1 million mental health-related services, reflecting a 4.1% increase from the previous year.
  • Prevalence of Anxiety: Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health condition in Australia, affecting one in three women (30%) and one in five men (20%).
  • Financial Stress: A Medibank survey revealed that 46% of people aged 18-49 believe the cost of Christmas negatively impacts their mental health.
  • Loneliness: Young people (aged 18-24) are almost twice as likely as older Australians (aged 65+) to feel lonely during the Christmas season.

Inpatient Mental Health Programmes

Our tailored inpatient mental health programmes are designed to help individuals navigate the complexities of the holiday season. We offer a range of therapeutic activities and support systems to ensure our patients receive the care they need.

Townsville Private Hospital Christmas Program Highlights

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT): This evidence-based therapy helps patients identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours.
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): A form of therapy that combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with concepts of mindfulness, DBT is particularly effective for those struggling with emotional regulation.
  • Christmas Art Therapy: Creative expression through art can be a powerful tool for healing and self-discovery, especially during the holidays.
  • Mindful Yoga: Combining physical movement with mindfulness practices, yoga can help reduce stress and promote mental well-being.
  • Understanding Anxiety: Educational sessions that provide insights into anxiety and practical strategies to manage it.
  • Worry and Problem Solving: Workshops focused on developing effective problem-solving skills and managing worries constructively.
  • Unpacking Addictive Behaviours: Sessions aimed at understanding and addressing addictive behaviours, crucial during a time when temptations may be higher.
