Walking Together for Suicide Prevention and Meaningful Mental Health Conversations

Today, as we celebrate R U OK? Day and recognise World Suicide Prevention Day, we're reflecting on the importance of connection, community and the conversations that help people feel seen, supported and less alone.

The day began early for our team at Townsville Private Clinic, who joined more than 100 community members at the Lifeline Queensland Out of the Shadows & Into the Light Walk 2026. The walk brought together people from across the region in support of suicide prevention, mental health awareness and the reminder that every conversation has the potential to make a difference.

One of the most impactful parts of the morning was hearing from lived experience speakers who generously shared their personal stories. Their honesty, courage and insights highlighted both the challenges that many people face and the importance of hope, connection and seeking support.

Participants also took part in a moving tribute, releasing rose petals into the ocean in memory of those lost to suicide. It was a powerful moment of reflection that acknowledged grief, honoured lives lost and reinforced the importance of continuing to support one another.

Back at the hospital, our team came together again for an R U OK? Day morning tea, providing another opportunity to connect, check in with colleagues and reflect on the simple but meaningful act of asking someone how they're really doing.

At Townsville Private Clinic, we are passionate about supporting mental health awareness initiatives throughout the year. Whether it's participating in community walks, supporting local events, promoting education or encouraging conversations about mental wellbeing, we are proud to get behind causes that help reduce stigma and foster connection.

While awareness days provide an important opportunity to focus on mental health, the message extends far beyond a single day. Meaningful conversations, acts of kindness and reaching out to those around us can have a lasting impact throughout the year.

We are grateful to everyone who participated in today's walk, shared their stories, volunteered their time and helped create a sense of community around such an important cause. Together, we can continue creating environments where people feel safe to speak openly, seek support and know they are not alone.

Because when it comes to mental health, every conversation matters.

Supporting Our Community During the Holiday Season

The holiday season is often seen as a time of joy and celebration, but for many, it can also bring significant challenges. Increased stress, social pressures, and the prevalence of substances can heighten the risks of relapse or lead to the 'Holiday Blues'. At Townsville Private Hospital, we understand these challenges and are committed to providing comprehensive support to our community during this festive period.
